Summary Description:
Provide leadership, guidance, and counsel to facility leadership on issues involving labor and employee relations, organization structure, staffing, benefits administration, HR compliance and workforce development issues. Serve as advisor and champion for safety and health matters.
Qualifications
Key Accountabilities:
Work with facility leadership to establish culture of employee involvement, recognition, open communication, and regular interaction with all employees.
Provide advice and counsel to facility leadership in local employee relations matters, up to and including collective bargaining and union avoidance, where applicable. Ensure proper administrative of all collective bargaining agreements within the mill.
Work with facility managers to develop and integrate change initiatives.
Lead employee development and bench strength strategies, using company training and development tools to implement such strategies.
Assist facility leadership in identifying and addressing performance issues to improve inefficiencies in the workplace.
Lead wage and salary administration matters at the operating level. Emphasis on salary budget and consistency of application across areas.
Provide leadership in staffing areas to include recruitment, talent management, retention, and employee engagement across all operating areas.
Ensure succession planning is a focus at the mill to improve bench strength and ensuring future talent is successfully recruited and retained for the business. Develop relationships for sources of talent by building relationships within the local communities to include local high schools, technical colleges and 4-year universities.
Ability to use analytical tools to provide people solutions for the business (example; governance and understanding of employee turnover).
Provide education and counsel to facility leaders to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws relating to benefits, compensation, and employment.
Lead people benchmarking strategies to influence labor costs through workforce planning, monitoring, and controlling additions to and/or reductions from staff.
Research and introduce HR best practices to ensure that the organization is utilizing HR technology and being proactive in implementing more effective and efficient strategies.
Ability to build joint Union and Management teams and develop cooperative and collaborative relationships to ensure stable recruitment and retention of mill talent to sustain the business.
Ensure collective bargaining agreements are properly administered.
Personal qualities
Required Experience and Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in HR Management or related discipline with a minimum of 10 years of experience. Advancement through the grade levels is dependent on experience and size/complexity of facility.
- Proven leadership ability leading and developing other HR professionals.
- Ability to be a strategic leader with the ability to “connect the dots” across the mill platform, drive organizational change, ensure employee engagement, and manage cross-functional projects.
- Demonstrated ability to create and implement standards of excellence and measurement scorecards.
- Not emotional or mercurial, but cool under pressure, particularly in labor relations arena.
- Superb communication skills.
Established record as a smart risk taker and problem solver. - High tolerance for ambiguity in certain situations.
- Understanding of NLRA, FLSA, ERISA, OSHA, EEO and other state and federal laws.
- Integrity and ability to hold matters confidential.
Preferred Experience & Education:
- Ten plus years of labor experience within heavy manufacturing, paper experience desired.
- Master’s degree and/or SPHR certification preferred.
Travel: Negotiable
