Why LCAs are important

Knowing the environmental impact of your packaging is essential. It will help you to make a more sustainable choice on the journey towards a sustainable packaging value chain. Packaging LCAs (Life Cycle Assessments) evaluate the potential environmental impact of a packaging life cycle – from production to disposal, considering materials, manufacturing, use, and methods of disposal.

Our customer-specific packaging LCAs identify environmental hotspots to help make wiser decisions. You will clearly see which improvements are the most efficient, providing a good starting point for making your packaging more sustainable. Furthermore, our packaging LCA enables comparability, more credible dialogue with customers and knowledge to work with your value chain and lower your scope 3 emissions.

Elements covered in a Billerud packaging LCA

A Packaging Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a standardized method recognized internationally for systematically evaluating the environmental impacts associated with the entire life cycle of packaging. The methodological requirements, applicable for the calculation tool, conform with ISO 14040 (2006), ISO 14044 (2006), and ISO 14025. The Billerud LCA encompasses all stages from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal, including production, assembly, use, and transportation. Based on our public EPDs, Billerud’s system of creating LCAs is third-party reviewed. Your customized comparable packaging LCA can be third-party reviewed on request.

Through a packaging LCA, you can identify critical points, or hotspots, where environmental impacts are most pronounced. The packaging LCA also enables comparability for well informed, long-term sustainable product choices. Furthermore a packaging LCA can give compliance with future regulations, like European Green Deal, PEF, BREEAM, LEED and SEDEX (supply chain management).

Why EPDs are important

As a brand owner or converter today, you should expect precise data on the real climate impact of the materials you use. For this, you need EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations), which are provided by Billerud for our packaging materials. These EPDs will form a solid base for later making an LCA assessment of the environmental impact of a material during its lifetime (cradle to grave). Independently reviewed EPDs are stored in a public database. They provide invaluable help to make informed choices.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is central for constructing a packaging LCA. The EPD shows environmental data of the ingoing material of the packaging. Billerud has public EPDs for many of our products. This gives us unique prerequisites for constructing trustworthy packaging LCAs together with our customers. An EPD is a formal sustainability declaration for external use, 3rd party reviewed and publicly published. The methodological requirements, applicable for the calculation tool, conform with ISO 14040 (2006), ISO 14044 (2006) and ISO 14025, EPDs offer transparency and credibility in communicating environmental performance. They make it possible to compare the sustainability of products in the same category.

Development of EPDs is made according to specific Product Category Rules (PCRs), which vary depending on product type, geographical region, and database requirements. These rules, established by ISO committees, industry associations, or relevant experts, ensure consistency and comparability across EPDs. Furthermore, verification by independent third parties enhances the reliability and trustworthiness of EPD data.

Centralized EPD databases compile and disseminate EPDs within specific sectors, empowering consumers and stakeholders to make informed decisions based on the environmental attributes of products. This access to comprehensive environmental data fosters sustainable consumption and drives continuous improvement in product design and manufacturing practices.

Unbiased, trustworthy data

Our own LCA modeling system is based on Sphera’s LCA for Packaging (LCA Pack). The system uses Spera’s Managed LCA Content with large amounts of environmental data. It’s configured for the specific needs of constructing new packaging solutions. Sphera is one of the most trusted and established suppliers in the area, with more than 10 000 users. As a base in our process, we use Billerud’s third-party assessed EPDs for our materials. This makes your packaging LCA and your internal comparisons even more trustworthy.

When it comes to cement sacks, durability is key. A broken sack can cause burning and big problems. It’s important to use sacks that are strong enough, without being too thick or too heavy in material, and bags that minimize dust. The consumers of tomorrow want every sack to have a low CO2e emissions and all cement to make as little harm as possible. With Billerud, you can construct cement sacks that are lighter and thinner than the competition – with the exact strength needed. Together, we gather data on CO2e emissions from raw materials, production, conversion, transportation, and more, using a comprehensive, customized, and third-party reviewed system.
