Since 1990 the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has been working actively to save the white-backed woodpecker through a number of different initiatives. An important element in this work is cooperation with landowners and forest companies.
Since 2016 BillerudKorsnäs has been part of the White-backed Woodpecker Project by supporting the construction of nesting boxes for the white-backed woodpecker and a rearing area for breeding at Järvzoo. Here white-backed woodpecker chicks are reared and then placed in restored, healthy, deciduous forest. BillerudKorsnäs is also involved in restoring these deciduous woodland areas not only for white-backed woodpeckers but for the many other species of insects and birds that they benefit.
The white-backed woodpecker is severely endangered. The woodpecker's home, deciduous woodland with a large amount of dead wood has been replaced by pine and spruce forests. The project will help to safeguard future white-backed woodpecker populations in Sweden.
