Summary Description:
Responsible for identifying and analyzing opportunities for significant process/product improvement across all mill systems. Develop, support and/or manage implementation of new processes for quality initiatives. Responsible for managing lab resources and team members
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide leadership for safe work practices throughout mill systems.
- Improve and optimize processes; provide assistance to production areas in evaluating changes to operation; aid operating personnel to better understand their processes and quality problems encountered; focus is on higher operating rates, efficiencies and de-bottlenecking.
- Manage lab resources, quality testing results, and communicate results with process engineers and paper machines.
- Ensure all testing equipment properly calibrated and properly maintained
- Reduce costs; complete cost reduction projects that provide significant savings through product substitution, reduced variability, improved quality, and higher operating efficiencies.
- Champion continuous quality improvement.
- Identify gaps in inspection and disposition systems and co-ordinate the effort to close them.
- Manage mill product stewardship needs.
- Assist Production areas with troubleshooting as needed.
- Report on activities through status reports of ongoing projects, results of troubleshooting activities, etc.
- Provide weekly on-call and weekend duty coverage as scheduled.
Qualifications
Required Experience and Education:
Minimum Required Experience and Education:
- BS or MS Pulp/Paper, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry
- At least 2 years’ experience in mill technical, production, product development with exposure to all mill operating areas (pulping, paper making, coating, utilities, etc.)
Minimum Required Skills:
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills; a solid background in statistical analysis is a plus.
- Proven experience with several leadership behaviors: Leading and Advocating Change, Drive for Results, Communication, Managerial Courage, Building and Effective Team, and Managing through Systems.
Personal qualities
- Ability to work in a team-based system.
- Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills along with strong team skills
- Prioritize and manage multiple projects to meet deadlines
- Thorough knowledge of processes/products/technologies across mill systems
- Work beyond normal work schedule as necessary to fulfill position responsibilities
