Billerud QuickFill® Plus

Designed for a cement industry in rapid change

A new type of cement needs a new type of packaging

Cement production alone accounts for as much as 7% of the global carbon dioxide emissions – three times the emissions produced by aviation. The cement industry is now on a decarbonization journey to bring down its carbon footprint.

A new type of cement is gaining ground, in which clinker is replaced by industrial byproducts and waste materials. The carbon content decreases, but the product is finer divided. Unlike traditional packaging materials, Billerud QuickFill® Plus is designed to handle such content.

Ultra-breathable paper allows for ultra-fine powders

When filling a sack with a high Blaine cement, you want the fine powder to stay inside while the air flows through the walls. This is exactly what you get with QuickFill® Plus, as it is made from inherently strong paper with extremely high breathability. Compared to regular high-porous paper and WPP sacks, this ultra-breathability allows for faster filling and minimizes the risk of trouble such as sack breakages.

MEETING THE CHALLENGES IN THE INDUSTRY

Challenge: Net zero targets
Opportunity: Lowest carbon footprint

The concrete industry wants to be carbon neutral by 2050. Reducing the amount of clinker in cement is key to reaching this target, but all actions count and will be needed. By choosing QuickFill® Plus for cement sacks instead of plastic, you can reduce your carbon dioxide footprint and stay below the line of contributing to global warming.

Challenge: High Blaine factor
Opportunity: Speed up filling

If you reduce the clinker-to-cement ratio by 1%, you reduce 8-9 kg of carbon dioxide per tonne of cement. However, the outcome is a more fine-powdered cement with a higher Blaine. QuickFill® Plus is an ultra-breathable paper suited ideally for fast filling of sacks for this type of cement.

Challenge: Cement dust everywhere
Opportunity: The cement stays in the sack

Cement sack filling is a dusty duty. Nose and throat irritation can occur, and long-term exposure could lead to loss of lung function and severe shortness of breath. Sacks made of QuickFill® Plus reduce dust in the filling process by up to 38% compared to WPP sacks. Besides the health benefits, a less dusty environment creates a more pleasant workplace, and less valuable cement ends up as waste.

Challenge: New policies evolving fast
Opportunity: Use the benchmark

Companies in the construction and cement industry, as well as organizations at all levels, are working to reduce emissions linked to cement production. Sustainability is already driving policy development and purchase decisions, and is likely to do even more so in the future. QuickFill® Plus ticks all the boxes for being the most sustainable sack material for the most sustainable type of cement.

HOW YOU BENEFIT FROM QUICKFILL® PLUS

Increase filling speed

You can fill a high Blaine cement faster if the sacks are made of QuickFill® Plus instead of traditional high-porous paper. The reason is that QuickFill® Plus is an ultra-breathable yet very strong paper. Even with fine-powdered cement, the risk of clogging is kept to a minimum thanks to superior breathability.

Reduce carbon footprint

Cement with a lower clinker content is a critical step towards reaching net zero targets. However, a lower clinker-to-cement ratio means you get a more fine-powdered cement. QuickFill® Plus lets you fill the cement sacks fast while reducing dust in the filling area. You don’t have to compromise when taking the next step in reducing your carbon footprint.

Improve health and safety

High Blaine cement means potentially even more dust in the filling area. However, with QuickFill® Plus, almost all the cement stays in the sack. Why? Because the paper is ultra-breathable while being extremely strong. The air from the filling process can pass through the walls without damaging the sack.

Decrease paper consumption

The paper we use for QuickFill® Plus is so strong you need less of it. Using a sturdy material for your cement sacks means reduced weight and less environmental impact while keeping the risk of sack breakage under control. Moreover, by choosing QuickFill® Plus, you align with the overall sustainability ambition of offering a high Blaine cement.

Simplify handling

Imagine a cement sack filled with a high Blaine cement with virtually no air inside. That’s exactly what you get with QuickFill® Plus. The result is a brick-shaped sack profile with high retained friction that is easy to stack on a pallet and transport even on bumpy roads.
