Strong cartonboard increases sustainability at construction sites
CrownBoard Craft™ is an incredibly strong cartonboard, made of 100% virgin fibers and engineered in multiple layers. The material is so tough and strong it can replace and outperform plastic in boxes for dispensing nuts, bolts and screws at construction sites.
A true challenge – creating a super-strong, water-resistant, heavy-duty cartonboard package
For Arvid Nilsson, a major supplier of fastening elements, CrownBoard Craft was exactly what they had been looking for. Conventional packaging in their line of business is made of plastic. With CrownBoard Craft, Arvid Nilsson found a renewable, recyclable, and sustainable material that is also strong and can be made water resistant.
Too much plastic
By way of background, we are constantly reminded of the threats to the environment posed by plastic trash, not least to the oceans and ocean life. To illustrate the scope of the problem, eight million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans every year*. A more segment-specific figure: Construction businesses across Europe produced 198,000 tonnes of plastic waste in 2016 – and that is excluding packaging**. Amounts are not likely to have decreased in the more recent years.
A perfect fit
The material used instead of plastic is CrownBoard Craft – 345 and 405 gsm respectively, depending on the size of the box. It was selected for its exceptional strength and for its environmental credentials. It was very important for Arvid Nilsson to make a truly sustainable choice: sourced from responsibly managed forests and produced in state-of-the-art, energy-efficient processes. Equally important, the board is made by a company that shares Arvid Nilsson’s visions and ambitions. Billerud is ranked by Dow Jones Sustainability Index as the world’s most sustainable packaging company for two years in a row. That matters. They found the right material from the right company.
We are very pleased to be able to offer our customers a sustainable packaging solution. The response from the market has been great, both in terms of function and environmental performance. We see an increasing demand for sustainable materials in the construction industry and hope that more companies will influence others to move in the right direction.
A watertight solution
To replace plastic boxes, a priority for Arvid Nilsson was water resistance. And the box made of CrownBoard Craft can in fact be left outside in the rain for several weeks without collapsing or letting in water. This is due to the strength of the board, the laminated surface, and the converter’s clever packaging design without gaps at the bottom corners of the box. Tests for water resistance, compression strength and converting properties were carried out by the Carton Solutions team at Billerud.

Here is how CrownBoard Craft from Billerud outperforms plastic:
- Renewable – more trees are planted than harvested, forests keep growing
- Recyclable – a wood fibre can be recycled up to 4–6 times
- Water resistant (with surface treatment)
- Tolerant to low temperatures
- Strong and durable – holds heavy and sharp objects
- Stiff and sturdy – stackable, for space efficient transport
- Strong – for repeated opening/closing of click lock
A waterproof solution: The cartonboard box that replaces plastic packs for screws and bolts. Tested for all weathers, in the lab and on construction sites.
